What to know about pre.dev
- The homepage example prices a repo with 20 million source tokens and 100 million history tokens at $6,000. (pre.dev, code licensing, 2026-10-17)
- pre.dev's estimator counts tokens as bytes divided by four, caps history at 100MB per path and skips vendored, minified and generated files. (pre.dev, token estimator script, 2026-10-17)
- One signature authorizes all later standard non-exclusive licenses, so the owner does not approve each deal. An interested AI lab reviews the repo's metadata, never the code, for 4 to 12 weeks, then makes an offer or passes. (pre.dev, license your codebases, 2026-10-17)
- The standing rates are the payout itself, with no platform commission taken from them. The owner is not told what the buyer paid or who the buyer is. (pre.dev Codebase Agreement (PDF), 2026-10-17)
- Buyer licenses are perpetual and irrevocable once they close, and buyers may use the code to train and fine-tune models. pre.dev may also take its own perpetual non-exclusive license at the standing rates. (pre.dev Codebase Agreement (PDF), 2026-10-17)
- Withdrawing takes 30 days' written notice. Existing licenses continue, deals already under way have a 90-day tail, and backups and pre.dev's own licensed copies are not destroyed. (pre.dev Codebase Agreement (PDF), 2026-10-17)
- The owner warrants a full chain of title from every founder, employee and contractor, that no client holds rights in the code, and that every open-source component and its license is disclosed. Agencies licensing client work should check this first. (pre.dev Codebase Agreement (PDF), 2026-10-17)
- The agreement bars dealing directly with a buyer pre.dev introduced, during the term and for 12 months after. (pre.dev Codebase Agreement (PDF), 2026-10-17)
Who it fits
Software owners who hold clean title to their code and want a fixed per-token price and the right to license the same code again.
What to watch for
- Payment depends on pre.dev first receiving the buyer's funds (Who Sells Data, Oct 14, 2026).
- Company and client names in paths, comments and documents are left as written after scrubbing (pre.dev, observed Oct 17, 2026).
- The owner's indemnity is uncapped, while pre.dev's liability is capped at what it paid the owner in the prior 12 months (pre.dev Codebase Agreement, observed Oct 17, 2026).
