The Mercor data breach: what a company licensing records should know

  • In April 2026 Mercor confirmed a breach it tied to a supply-chain attack on LiteLLM, an open-source library. It said it was one of thousands of companies affected and that the malicious code was removed within hours of discovery. (Fortune, Mercor security incident, 2026-04-02)
  • The extortion group Lapsus$ claimed up to four terabytes of data, including source code, database records, Slack data and internal tickets. Unconfirmed reports said datasets from some Mercor customers and details of their confidential AI projects may have been taken. Mercor had not confirmed those reports. (Fortune, Mercor security incident, 2026-04-02)
  • The class actions that followed were brought by Mercor's contractors and job candidates, not by client companies. The Wall Street Journal counted at least seven by late April 2026. Mercor said it strongly disputes the claims. (Jerusalem Post, AI firm Mercor faces lawsuits over alleged data breach, 2026-04-27)
  • One of them, Ananthula v. Mercor.io Corporation, No. 3:26-cv-03362 (N.D. Cal., filed Apr 21, 2026), alleges the theft of recorded interviews, facial biometric data, background checks and tax and banking details, plus about 939 GB of source code and internal systems data. These are the plaintiffs' allegations, not findings. (Hausfeld (plaintiffs' counsel), Mercor data breach case page, 2026-10-19)

Who it fits

  • Anonymization is fully automated, with no manual review (Mercor FAQ, observed Oct 16, 2026).
